Artist Ralph Lee founded New York City’s Village Halloween Parade in 1974, which came to attract over 250,000 people by the time he moved on in 1985. Since the early 90’s, his Halloween creatures have haunted the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at the annual Procession of the Ghouls.

The Columbus/Amsterdam Business Improvement District (BID) is a non-profit formed in 1987 for the purpose of improving the economic viability of Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues between 96th and 110th. The BID works with merchants, property owners, community organizations, and residents. Daily sidewalk cleaning crews, tree pit plantings, and a monthly EVENTS calendar are some of the BID’s on-going projects.
This diverse neighborhood has allowed the BID to highlight the varied local talents and backgrounds through such events as the Duke Ellington Boulevard Music Festival featuring local musicians, A Taste of Mexico (a cultural festival on Mexican Independence Day), and community garden Harvest and Halloween parties.

Sonic Youth Yoko Ono Mike Patton Sean Lennon Cibo Matto Mephista Marc Ribot Uri Caine Aleph Trio John Zorn, host
More than a dozen innovative artists at the intersection of indie rock, contemporary jazz, and avant-garde performance will come together at Miller Theatre to present a benefit concert to support recovery efforts in Japan. “The tragedy and devastation is really overwhelming,” says John Zorn, who has organized and will host the evening. “I’ve always felt a strong personal connection to Japan, and I’m just glad to be able to do my part to help. It should be an amazing night.”
The lineup includes feature performances by musician and artist Yoko Ono, and her son Sean Lennon, Japanese-American indie duo Cibo Matto, and the influential band Sonic Youth. Vocalist Mike Patton will appear as a special guest, and Mephista, Marc Ribot, Uri Caine, and John Zorn’s Aleph Trio will also play short sets. Both the performers and the theater are donating their services, ensuring that 100% of proceeds from ticket sales will go to benefit the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit near Sendai on March 11. Funds will be donated to the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

This is a waste of American’s money and time. These students were friendly, bright kids. Is it surprising that they had to sell drugs to pay off a $57,000 tuition? The problem in Morningside Heights is not drug crazed young adults. How about we take down the crack heads down the street selling dangerously cut drugs to the homeless? How about we stop some of the muggers and street harassers that constantly bother Columbia students? Or how about we solve some of the 41% of the murders that go unsolved? Get the cops out of the private lives of hardworking and highly educated students and work on some of the problems coming down from Harlem. I challenge any of you to attend Columbia University and pay off a $57,000 tuition while taking on a unpaid internship and taking classes harder than most people will ever encounter. Most people have no clue what Ivy League students go through in order to further the overall educational level and research for this country. Be grateful for once that we are picking up the slack for most citizens who are uneducated and lazy.

mydailycoffee:
Since I haven’t intersected with the ex-Joe barista again, I’ve contented myself with pretty good Counter Culture Ethiopian Yirgacheffe French press and drip coffee during my last two visits to Society Coffee & Juice, on Frederick Douglass and 114th in Harlem.
mydailycoffee:
Very nice caffe latte from Morningside Heights spot Society Coffee & Juice which recently switched to Counter Culture after five years of serving dreck.
